On a nice day with light clouds, the fans gathered to see some Blood Bowl. Unfortunately many of them were disappointed, for there was very little of either blood or bowl during the match; instead it largely consisted of the players shoving around or gently pushing over each other. The Northfolk Nuggets, being the underdog team in this match, had induced their customary chef as well as the famous (or should that be infamous?) star player Puggy Baconbreath. In addition, some sneaky bribing ensured that the organizers reserved the spectator sections closest to the pitch for the Nugget fans, allowing them to take a hand in any fighting along the sideline. (The Body Counters took careful note of this and stayed away from the sidelines for the entire match.)
Body Count won the toss and chose to kick, which they then did very deeply indeed. After some desultory "blocking" (poking, more like!) by the trees Roddy Duvel barely managed to pick the ball up; but feeling rather clumsy he didn't dare to pass it to Purdy Sweet-tooth as the game plan required and instead kept it for himself. The Body Counters then herded most of the Nuggets into a clump on the Line of Scrimmage, smothering the trees in tackle zones and requiring any halfling that wanted to move to dodge; and although the trees did their best to break clear (or at least clear enough for a 'fling toss) they failed miserably. The only bright point in this shamble was when the star mummy Symbol managed to trip on his own bandages and knocked himself out cold for the rest of the match. [Game note: Break Tackle with ST6, rolls an '1'. Team reroll, rolls an '1'...] To compensate for this, rookie mummy Knugen III hit Puggy Baconbreath so hard on the head that he (Puggy, that is) was sent to the infirmary where his personal medical staff pampered him silly.
Eventually the vicious zombie Crackle got a crack at the ball carrier and knocked him down, causing the ball to fall in the hands of his fellow zombie Mr. Blunty - who against all odds caught it! Instead of allowing him to score however, the Counter coach ordered him to hand the ball off to Wobble the ghoul. The Nuggets tried to throw up a screen to protect the end zone, but the undead battered their way through and Wobble scored the first touchdown of the game just as the whistle blew to end the half.
The second half saw the Nuggets kick the ball; but the game was delayed as the crowds - by now very cross with the lack of both blood and interesting ball handling - started rioting. The ref let the clock run until the crowds quieted down, shortening the half considerably. The undead then rolled forward slowly but surely, knocking down Frothy Angel so hard that the coach feared for his life and asked the carpenter to intervene (which he did, and rather more successfully than when Grumpy Rotroot was hurt too!). Again the Nuggets did their utmost to stop them, but in spite of some extremely inspired dodging by Blondie Leffer (who ran straight through a multi-layer screen and out on the other side to blitz down ball carrier Mr. Expendable from behind) the Counters scored a second touchdown with only a few minutes left to go.
As the teams deployed for the final drive, the Body Counters kicked deep - and immediately blitzed! While they didn't do any serious damage (only a couple of stuns), they unnerved Ken Stoutgut so much that he failed to pick the ball up - leaving over half the team open to be blocked to paste by the undead! The only Nugget who did anything sensible at this point was Anto Gaffer, who ran forward into scoring range. Then the dreaded close fight started; but for once the Nuggets' flimsy cardboard armour held, and miraculously no-one got hurt! The undead also used this scrum to push Wobble forward to where he could *just* reach the ball and score - but just as he reached for the ball he stumbled, and the ball bounced straight into Ken's arms. This was too good of a chance to miss, so he ran forward as fast as he could, passed (!) the ball to Blondie Leffer, who in turn handed off to Anto Gaffer for a last-second touchdown. Who ever imagined that halflings could do end-to-end touchdowns!?
However, the match was irretrievably lost. The crowds were disappointed by the lack of blood, and the Nugget coach was very disappointed by both his trees' weak blocking (tender patting!) and his butterfingered halflings. As he walked from the pitch, he was heard muttering: "Well, that could've gone better..." |
